Start With the Project, Not the Product.

Schools are often presented with impressive new devices, displays, software platforms, and classroom systems. But the technology itself is only one part of a successful project.

Before comparing manufacturers or requesting quotes, it helps to understand what the school is trying to accomplish, what already exists, how the technology will be implemented, and what will happen after installation.

The following framework can help schools make more informed technology decisions and avoid unnecessary complexity.

1. Start With the Instructional Goal

Before discussing products, define what the technology needs to accomplish.

A classroom display project might be intended to improve visibility, simplify screen sharing, support interactive instruction, or replace aging equipment. A STEM project may be focused on robotics, engineering, coding, fabrication, or expanding career-connected learning opportunities.

Questions to consider include:

  • What problem are we trying to solve?

  • Who will use the technology?

  • How will it support instruction?

9. Compare Solutions Based on Fit, Not Features

It is easy to compare products based on specification sheets.

The more important question is whether the solution fits the school.

A product with more features is not necessarily the better option if those features add cost or complexity without improving the classroom experience.
